In 1997, Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, Umberto Agnelli's son and grandson of Gianni, died of a rare form of cancer at only 33 years, and were likely to succeed his uncle at the head of the Fiat Group. John Elkann was chosen in the same year as his successor.
He started his professional career in 2001 at General Electric as a member of the Corporate Audit Staff with responsibilities in Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

It is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Soci￩t￩ G￩n￩rale de Surveillance in Geneva, not Executive Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Swiss banking giant UBS and a director of Philip Morris International (tobacco giant part of the Altria group).In 2006 he was knighted by the President of work Giorgio Napolitano.Marchionne is considered, along with Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the architect of the rehabilitation division of Fiat Group Automobiles.
